“I’m too body conscious to go to a gym”, “I need to slim down before I go into a gym” “the gym is full of beautiful and trim people” – Sound familiar?
In my line of work as a Personal Trainer I hear these kind of statements daily and here is my answer – No one gives a shit about you!
Let me explain. The Gym is full of self-centred, self-obsessed, vain, hardworking individuals who all started in the same place as you are right now. If they are not training they'e posing for selfies, or checking their back or ass out. Or on their phone or wondering who has bigger biceps or better abs or who can bench more than them! Do you honestly think anyone in a gym gives a shit what your doing or what you look like or what you’re wearing? Do you really think anyone cares?
I don’t mean to sound disrespectful, but no they don’t! Unless you are some Adonis, or goddess with THE most amazing ass, no one cares! If you can squat 200kg ass to the grass for 10 reps they’ll care for a few seconds. If you can bench 200kg for 10 reps they’ll look up from their 18th filtered selfie. You could walk in naked and most people wont blink!
What I’m trying to say is, everyone’s head is focused on themselves, as you are, so why do you think they’ll be thinking you don’t look right in the gym or shouldn’t be there because your overweight or unfit? Why do you think they care? Honestly why?
Your issues are something you’ve created for what ever reason and 99.9% of people will NOT be thinking the same reasons about you. They might be thinking the same reason about their selves, but definitely not you!
If the machines and environment scare you, that’s justifiable, so ask a trainer or member of staff to assist you and to show you – that is their job after all! If the mirrors bother you, find somewhere quite or drag some kit where there is no mirrors, or just don’t look in them. The mirrors are there to check posture when training, but we all know we check ourselves out, so crack on with that and don’t let that intimidate you, why should it? After all, NO ONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT YOU!
So, find a gym that has a good reputation, step inside without the concern that everyone is starring at you, ask to speak to the manager or a staff member or find a trainer and go and own it!
